The Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was a border fortification system of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) during the division of Germany, which existed for more than 28 years, from 13 August 1961 to 9 November 1989, and was intended to hermetically seal off the GDR from West Berlin. It not only separated the connections in the area of Greater Berlin between the eastern part („capital of the GDR“) and the western part of the city, but completely enclosed all three sectors of the western part, thus also cutting off its connections to the rest of the surrounding area, which was in the GDR district of Potsdam. Most of the Wall ran a few metres behind the actual border.
The former inner-German border between West Germany (old Federal Republic) and East Germany (GDR) must be distinguished from the Berlin Wall.
